Meggido Mosaic
The discovery of an IMPORTANT mosaic in Israel REAFFIRMS Israel as a key witness to God’s Word. This mosaic verifies the existence of a Christian community in Kfar Othnay, a settlement from the Roman and Byzantine era.
The archaeologists of Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) discovered the mosaic during the excavations of Kfar Othnay in 2003 to 2005 on the site of the modern Megiddo prison.
This elaborate mosaic, which measured about 16 by 32 feet, covered the floor of a Christian worship hall. This hall formed a wing of a large residential building used by Roman soldiers. The hall, which dates back to around 230 AD, is the earliest evidence in Israel that refers to Christian worship.
The inscription of the mosaic tells us about a donation of the “table dedicated to the God Jesus” by the woman Akeptous, who may have been a woman of financial resources and social status and is described as philotheos, meaning “God lover”. The table, which was the focus of the room, stood in the center and was probably used in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
This finding confirms that Christian gatherings focused on the new covenant confirmed in the blood of Jesus, as in Acts 2:42 “And they persevered in the teaching of the apostles, and in fellowship, and in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” The use of the Eucharist is in obedience to the request of Jesus as in Luke 22:19. “Then he took bread, and after giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body that is given to you; do it in remembrance of me.”
This extraordinary mosaic serves as the earliest known inscription identifying Jesus as God.
This discovery compels us as children of our Heavenly Father to rethink our position regarding Israel in recognition that God used Israel and the Jews as instruments to bless all nations as written in Genesis 22:18 “And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have listened to my voice.” It is vital that we heed God’s Word about the land of Israel, the Jewish nation, and the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God.
Romans 11:17 and 18 “And if some of the branches were cut off, and you who were a wild olive tree, were grafted among them, and partakers of the root and the fatness of the olive tree, then do not boast against the branches; and if you boast it is not you who carry the carrot, but the carrot for you”. refers directly to the Jews from whom Jesus was born! Many of us, consciously or unconsciously, allows opinions to guide us instead of the Word of God. Israel is not a political entity, Israel is the Land that God has chosen to bless all nations through His Son Jesus Christ.
Evidence, confirming the Biblical narrative, such as the mentioned mosaic, expose the lies that serves to mislead people concerning our faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ. Israel is a key witness, therefore the enemy creates myths regarding Israel with the sole intend to bring about anti-Semitisme, subverting our faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that became Israel. Anti-Semitisme steals in effect our blessed inheritance as in Genesis 12:3 as God said “I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
